Embedded SQL

Embedded SQL is SQL that's included in a System i program written in another language – usually, but not always, RPG. Embedded SQL is one of the easiest and best ways to leverage SQL on the System i, because it let’s you take advantage of your current programming expertise and utilize the different strengths of SQL and RPG.

Sharon Hoffman is a senior technical editor for System iNEWS magazine and has worked with IBM midrange systems since 1981. She focuses on emerging technologies such as Java, XML, and Domino, and she is particularly interested in how these technologies integrate with existing AS/400-iSeries applications. Her background includes extensive application development experience as a programmer, systems analyst, and consultant. She's also been involved with IT education for nearly 20 years as an instructor, writer, and editor. Sharon is a regular speaker at COMMON and other industry events.



Course Agenda:

This course introduces embedded SQL coding techniques and covers topics such as communication between SQL and RPG, processing result sets, and handling error conditions. The course also addresses design issues, debugging considerations, and performance considerations for embedded SQL.

Prerequisites:

All students should have an understanding of RPG coding and basic SQL (e.g., Select, Update, Insert, Delete) syntax and concepts. COBOL programmers may benefit from the course, but all examples will use RPG or CL.

Minimum Technical Requirements:

  • Minimum 56KB Internet access (faster access highly recommended)*
  • PC hardware: 300 MHz, 128MB memory, 500 MB available disk space
  • PC software: Windows 2000 or higher
